While driving to the Prescott house the back way from Sedona, we came across Slide Rock and quickly penciled in a trip there over a weekend in September. That weekend quickly came and we drove up to Prescott and had mini adventures planned for the Rodeo weekend.
Slide Rock State Park took its name from a natural water slide formed by the slippery bed of Oak Creek. Tall red rock formations that are typical of the region also surround the park, which contains a 43-acre working apple farm.
The land was first developed by Frank L. Pendley, who arrived in the canyon in 1907 and acquired title to the land under the Homestead Act in 1910. Pendley developed an irrigation system (which is still in use today) and planted an apple orchard in 1912. The state completed a road through the canyon in 1914, and Pendley built rustic tourist cabins in 1933 that in part survive today. Several films were shot in the area: Angel and the Badman (1946), Broken Arrow (1950), Drum Beat (1954), and Gun Fury (1953).
The park was purchased by Arizona State Parks from the Arizona Parklands Foundation on July 10, 1985, and dedicated as Slide Rock State Park in October 1987.
Now let me just say that this water was absolutely FRIGID! I would put my toes in and my toes would physically ache and throb from the chilly water. Now, once your body went completely numb, it wasn't so bad, but that initial dip takes a very courageous person.
So cold!
Most of the people were sliding down the little waterfalls. Syd, Chris and Addison were dying to try it. I......was not. I happily volunteered to monitor and photograph. It was soooo cold!

Before we left, we ventured to another section of the rocks and Mom actually got in with Addison. There is good reason that they call it Slide Rock, it's covered in mossy goo. I saw several people slip and fall onto the rocks, it was actually kinda scary. Once you fall, hard to get back up again. We played in the water a while longer and then hiked back up and down the trail back to our car.
